Glint – Part 1 – Piece 1

February 26, 2011

This is the first piece of part 1 of my novel “Glint”. I have separated it not into chapters, but into small pieces. The first piece is quite small, so I will post it in its entirety.

The robot squeezed the man’s body against its chest as tightly as it could. Hard enough that blood oozed out from the man’s nose and dribbled over his thick brown mustache. It squeezed and squeezed and squeezed. Finally, shaking, it let the limp body slip from its arms and fall like a discarded doll. The man laid there on the polished hardwood floor, his clean three piece suit tangled around him. The robot hugged its arms around itself. Its small motions made sad, musical sounds. To the robot they seemed to screech in the emptiness of the house.

It stood there, rigid and glowing faintly as the pale light of the dying day trickled into the three large dining room windows. Dust drifted past the light creating a warm haze. A pack of small, light-brown cockroaches scuttled out from gaps in the robot’s body. Unnoticed by the robot, they too looked down at the man.

The robot may have stood there forever but the roaches shifted and started to buzz. Their noise crushed the dreamlike surroundings and the robot looked up. A small girl lay crumpled and broken on the dark wooden stairs. Her long blond hair was a tangle of blood masking her face.

The insects hid away as the robot staggered over to the girl. It knelt down and stared at the body. Reaching to touch her it found that it could not. Its hands hovered, unable to close the final inch. A shuffle in the living room distracted it, and it turned eagerly away from the horrid scene.
