Time Traveller 4

March 25, 2011

“Days of Our Lives” was just starting and I echoed the last words of the introduction, “…these are the days of our lives” and watched as the sand emptied from the hourglass. Time, I thought, could be like the hourglass. No sand was wasted. All it took was one flick and you were back to the start. Or even halfway through you could turn the hourglass over again. I doubted that I had lived my entire life before I went back to the start. Did I even go back to the start? I thought.

When did I first realise that this was happening? I started the journal long after my first inkling that something was amiss. I had thought about this before and questioned other people of memory. My memory and everyone’s, it seemed, was pretty hazy for the first ten years. But the first thing I was sure of, from what I read, are called “premonitions”. These are little things like feelings or little messages from the future.

Frequently in primary school, sometimes multiple times a day, I would predict events. Say, I would know a few moments before hand that my friend Dane was going to say that he was going to the bathroom, and then he would. That was a common one. Sometimes, however, the premonition feeling came, but the situation did not happen. That was some proof to me that I had travelled into the past. At first I thought that I was getting glimpses of the future. I now realise that I knew what was going to happen because I had lived it before. When the feeling came for a premonition and it did not happen, that meant that I had changed the future.

  1. I can imagine the location very strongly in this piece. It reminds me of our house in North Gosford! What inspired the idea for this piece? Was it in the back of your mind for awhile, or did some recent event prompt it? Do you know how it ends already, or is the process still spontaneous?
