June 3rd….More poetry on Memory/Belonging

June 3, 2011
Here are two more poems. “But We Made It” was inspired by one of my favourite 19th century Russian writers, Maxim Gorky, and his, what we would call today, travel blog on Russia. For those interested in history,  and especially the stories of real people, then “Through Russia: A Book of Stories” is a tremendous read that captures the heart and soul of people in only a way a great writer can.
The second is a poem called “Ingenuous” about the word itself and also belonging. I have a bit of an interest in etymology and it seems to me that words change and evolve as much as living things can, picking up meaning, losing meaning, or totally changing. What were their own roots? Can we even find the true meaning and beginnings if it can only be explained using other words?
Here below are some more thoughts on my continuing work on Belonging and Memory.
What I’m trying to address are these feelings of belonging. These could include physical things, e.g. objects and places, that we charge with importance and mesh together to form our identity and reaffirm our sense of belonging and connection to our past.
What I have found (and which could be my agenda, though I try to keep true to the moment) is the transient nature of this feeling. How we make connections to things that, in a sense, are not real and in some instances we base our lives upon these.
It is the search for authenticity, the journey to it, and whether this is even possible at all.
And as I think about it also, Buddhism teaches you to live in the moment, not worrying about the past or future, but to make the most of now and the present moment. To become totally disconnected from our past, shed the affects of everything that has come before, and find the true being beneath. To be lifted above all of this and become buoyant and free. So obvious questions present themselves. How do you overcome all these obstacles and be free? Does the past really affect our present and future so much? Is it possible to become free at all?
So there were some more of my thoughts and I try to express these in as many varied and interesting ways as possible.
