Poetry – Everywhere

February 9, 2012

You’re here. You’re god-damn everywhere.

You’re in the dust now on my feet.

I sweep in another corner and you’re there.

A hair or two is easy to remove,

but the skin you left is indomitable.

It’s unseen, but just knowing it’s there is enough

to start scrubbing the floors. Each light brown

slat of wood has minute cracks between them.

On hands and knees, I peer down the ant crevices and

imagine parts of you staring up at me. Out comes

the nail-file and I am scraping the guerillas of you

from their sub-pedestrian hiding places.

It takes half the day. Finished I rise to a knee.

I look around with small satisfaction.

It is quiet but I can’t relish the moment. There’s a ghost.

Something inhuman. The hole you’ve left from your absence.

I blast some music to at least replace your voice.

To drown out the quiescence. To batter the senses numb.

I crash on the bed and dig my face into pillows.

It was only ever a single. It now feels enormous.

The freedom is agoraphobic. I cannot breath and when I do

all I take in is the faint scent of your vanilla.

It destroys me from the inside. I sit up gasping and I see you.

You’re in the tea-towel hooks on the cupboard.

You’re in the box where the recycling is put.

You’re in the TV’s reflections staring from the corner.

You’re still here and you’re god-damn everywhere.
