Response to comment…Belonging

February 9, 2012

“The first step (toward wisdom) is to learn to be at home anywhere, and the second is to be at home nowhere.”
Buddhist Monk

Kim posted these words in a comment she made and I’d like to analyse them. I am a lay Buddhist myself (I got started on this road by an acid trip way back when I was 21…another story) and one of the major themes of the religion (it kinda is and kinda isn’t one) is understanding that everything is connected and appreciating that, and then secondly, knowing that everything is connected, losing that ownership of it. Letting go the selfish and arrogant “this is mine” approach. I could go out on any different tangent with this, but I’ll throw it back to the commentator and in relationship to art and ideas.

How do you interpret those words, Kim? I definitely feel at home anywhere and also nowhere, however it is the search for home that inspires, frustrates, excites and maddens myself. It is the constant effort to conceptualise what a home is, and when this home is created, how to destroy it. How to abandon it, but not feel isolated or insecure.

We have to both accept and reject every place, because they are all just ideas and concepts. To paraphrase, I think it was a Nobel Prize winning scientist, who said that Man makes its laws and attaches itself to them to feel safe and certain. But there are no certainties, only challenges ready to be broken.

You have to keep challenging ideas and held notions of what is good and bad, right and wrong. I feel this is a cornerstone of art. Having an open, questioning mind that can accept a notion for sometime, and just as easily reject it if it proves insufficient for the purpose.

I’ll end there as I’m already about to wax poetic
