Why Write Poetry???

March 3, 2013

There is romantic appeal in it

but it ends more relationships

than it starts or saves.

No man can admit it to his friends

without a little cringe

so where are the bragging rights?

Not for the money,

because fools do things for that.

Who would buy a poem anyway?

A confusing compilation of words.

For the love of art

which I and anyone else

cannot even explain.

For the love of creation

to give birth and gain immortality

the only way Man can.

What is the point if they cannot love me back

and the world is ending soon?

To leave a mark or let my voice be heard

but I have nothing to say

and no one is listening.

Cathartic, sure, but only temporarily.

No cure. Only a test of symptoms.

I name them over and over

healing nothing.

To be famous

if anyone did read poetry

or if fame in anyway brought happiness.

Because prose is too long.

Because I have the free time.

Because I just don’t know.

Perhaps in the end

it’s just another excuse

to drink alone.

  1. Why Not Write Poetry? Those who can do while those who can’t criticize those who can.

    • Indeed, sir. To add my little rant, poetry needs some better PR. It is the first art. Mens sane in corpore sana, as Plato said. For men, it was an essential part of being a man, one of the great past times, equal to the physical arts. In Japan the haiku was the same, a way to exercise the mind. To try to explain and define our intangible thoughts with our crude words. To give them a shape. To communicate them with our voices in practical telepathy with others and to be satisfied when the magical combination is just right to pull forth ours and others emotions and thoughts. And now?…Those are my thoughts anyway 🙂
