Born Free

August 4, 2013

I was born free for a month

and at my chosen prison

I was free

for only a few sheets in the morning,

a shake and a thanks.

With drunken nights and movie nights

new friends became closer.

I had no money but I had a bed

where I was never alone.

I kept myself an inmate there

because even if we are born free

we never stay it. Perhaps at this place

we could lease freedom

in the city of Bangkok

a city that suffocates in its sprawl

of streets soaked in Sang Som sleaze.

The strip is open on any night

if you’re free and we’re all free

to be prisoners here. Escape

is staying put or fleeing even further.

So after a month of born free

that’s what I did

and here I am

on a wet July road to Phuket

blanket on my lap and a job waiting.

Something and somewhere else

to imprison me and remind –

that although we are all born free

we never remain so.
